H.E. Jean-Yves Le Drian had meetings with H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan. A new letter of intent was endorsed, enhancing the France-UAE partnership for sustainability and the fight against climate change. The French Minister also inaugurated the new renovated premises of the Lycée Louis Massignon in Abu Dhabi, attended the launch of Louvre Abu Dhabi’s latest temporary exhibition, “10,000 Years of Luxury” and gathered the French community in Sorbonne Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi, October 28th, 2019 – The Minister for Europe and Foreign affairs of France, H.E. Mr. Jean-Yves Le Drian, visited the United Arab Emirates on 27th and 28th October, 2019.
As part of the strong political partnership between France and the United Arab Emirates, Mr. Jean-Yves Le Drian met with His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces in order to strengthen the bilateral relations between France and the UAE and to tackle regional issues of common interest amid joint efforts to appease tensions in the region.
Jean-Yves Le Drian also met with his counterpart, His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE minister of Foreign affairs and International cooperation.
Further to their meeting at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two ministers endorsed a letter of intent for an Emirati – French partnership on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the UN 2030 Agenda, recognizing the common priority given to fighting climate change.
Jean-Yves Le Drian also seized the opportunity of his visit to inaugurate the new extended premises of the Lycée Louis Massignon primary school and kindergarten in Abu Dhabi, in presence of H.E. Hussain bin Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Minister of Education, representatives from the Abu Dhabi’s Department of Education and Knowledge, and of the French schooling community in the UAE.
On that occasion, the Minister declared: “I am thrilled to be back in the Lycée Louis Massignon in Abu Dhabi, one year after attending the first day of school, in September 2018. The network of French schools in the UAE is outstanding: welcoming more than 10 000 pupils, it is the 6th network in the world. The growing network of French schools in the UAE is a symbol of the ambitions of the French government regarding the education abroad, which is to double the number of pupils in the French schools by 2030.”
Alongside H.H. Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Member of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Crown, H.E. Noura Al Kaabi, UAE minister of Culture and Knowledge development and H.E. Mohamed Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism, Abu Dhabi, H.E. Jean-Yves Le Drian participated in the inauguration of Louvre Abu Dhabi’s new temporary exhibition “10,000 Years of Luxury”, showcasing 350 extraordinary objects celebrating the world history in fashion, jewelry, art, furniture and design.
The inauguration was attended by representatives of the French partner institutions, including Musée des Arts Décoratifs and Musée du Louvre, Musée d’Orsay et de l’Orangerie and the Musée national des arts asiatiques / Guimet. A few days before the second anniversary of the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Minister highlighted the success of the museum, which already welcomed more than 1 million visitors during its first year and embodies the exceptional cultural partnership between France and the UAE. He also commended the vibrant cultural and artistic ties developed throughout two years of the “Emirati – French Cultural Dialogue” (February 2018 – March 2020).
The minister then visited Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, another icon of the Emirati-French cultural and educational cooperation, in presence of H.E. Mohamed al Khaja and H.E. Mohamed al Nuaimi, Members of the board of Trustees of Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi and Mrs. Marie-Céline Daniel, Vice President for Education and Lifelong Learning of Sorbonne University. He met with the French community living in the United Arab Emirates and honored the winners of the “VIE” (French young professionals abroad) award. The French business community – 600 companies and a regional French tech hub – is fully mobilized for the success of Expo 2020 Dubai.
In his speech, Mr. Jean-Yves Le Drian highlighted the ever-growing close cooperation between the two countries in all sectors, including culture, education and francophonie, Artificial intelligence and trade. He also underlined the strong cooperation on security matters as France and the United Arab Emirates will mark the 10th anniversary of the opening of a military base in Abu Dhabi in November.
